No Contact Order

Also called an anti-harassment order, a No Contact Order is something that you obtain from a court using your lawyer's assistance. Such an order will prohibit someone from contacting you in person, by phone, through writing or through a third party at the your residence, work place or school. Most NCOs remain in effect for one year, but given good cause, they can be granted initially for two years, or renewed near their expiration date.

Enforcement of No-Contact Orders

After a No Contact Order has been issued, only the court that issued it will have the legal authority to lift or to modify the order. If a person who is restrained by an NCO violates any provision of the order, that person can be arrested by the police and placed in jail. A violation which does not involve an assault is a separate gross misdemeanor offense, while a No Contact Order violation which involving an assault or reckless endangerment may be filed as a felony offense. A third conviction for violation of a No Contact Order may also be filed as a felony offense.
